“Sometimes it feels like I do not know where my heart belongs.
It belongs in an old studio apartment in downtown Portland, something it always wanted dearly and never had. It belongs in Grandma and Grandpa’s living room, in the town where it was raised. It belongs walking barefoot along the Puget Sound late at night, anxious in love. It belongs strolling through Pike’s Place with my closest of friends, sitting in the backyard all summer with two guys I will never forget, and making a home out of my first college house with three great girls even if since we have gone our separate ways.
Most of all, right now, my heart belongs knee-deep in river water. Letting the Shenandoah rush gently past me. The one place where I can be flooded with so many memories at once and not pulled under. Able to breathe. Able to feel still and grounded and not so lost. Able to recognize the important things in this life, and the things that are merely temporary. And every time, as I drive away from this place… my heart aches. It is deeply rooted here.
But I can always come home. Any time. And that thought stops the aching. It stops the aching caused by walking out the door and driving out of town, and helps me to realize that it is okay for a heart to belong in many places. My heart is rooted on the banks of the river, but my heart is also putting down roots in Charlottesville… and that’s okay. I can have the best of all these places that each have their own way of making my heart whole…
…and that makes it a little easier to travel the distances in between.”
