Five Years In

by STEPHANIE BROOKS

You don’t realize how greyed
the shutters become over time,
or the split in the wood
supporting the stairs. A door’s creak

becomes second nature
along with the backwards
turning of the tarnished
handle. Light bulbs bright

and blazing are forgotten
until you notice other houses:
polished, brilliant in fresh paint
sitting on high hills with grass
green, even in winter.
